Here I sit. Kids in bed and feeling ambitious.
I've wanted to start a blog for some time. Not just for Willow Nicole Cosmetics, but a lifestyle blog. Health, fitness, fashion, beauty, family, home decor, spirituality. Me in a nut shell. If I just closed my eyes and typed, I would lose you all after the first paragraph. WHERE DO I BEGIN!?! I have a million thoughts, but no starting point. So I figured, lets just start at the beginning...
My love for fashion and beauty probably developed in the womb. I am a firm believer that it is embedded in my DNA (thanks Grandma Wilde!). As a young teen, or tween as you crazy kids call it these days, I would play with makeup at the drugstore. Until I discovered MAC...This place is a young woman's heaven. I experimented with all of the eyeshadows and lipsticks. I eventually began working at a few different cosmetic counters at The Bay. You really learn a whole lot about beauty products when you are surrounded by 15 different cosmetic lines! This is actually where I discovered my appreciation for skincare and having a proper routine. You need a heck of a lot less makeup if the canvas is properly nourished and taken care of. From here is where the rituals started.
Body: Exfoliate. Cleanse. Moisturize. Repeat.
Face: Cleanse. Exfoliate. Mask. Eye Cream. *deep breath* Toner. Serum. Moisturizer. Repeat.
Somewhere in the mix is where I found my other love, yoga. For those of you who have also fallen in love with yoga, you know how it makes your eyes open to the world around you. And if you have not yet, go fall in love and fall down the rabbit hole. :) I discovered what a lot of my favorite brands were doing wrong. Horrible ingredients, very un-environmentally friendly and often tested on animals. I did some hardcore research and did find some brands that were green. But that wasn't enough. I wanted to really get back to basics. Simple ingredients, simple processing, simple packaging. I found some great resources (Pinterest really)** to get started on making my own body products. I did this for a while before I started making products for my family. Not only was I doing something that was so fun, but it turns out the products were good! Good enough they were asking for more.
I continued on my DIY path into my first pregnancy. My version of nesting was making all the baby products for my little bun. Ya ya, that SCREAMS first time mom, but I actually walked the walk with all that talk! Everything you see in my baby line I used and still use for my babes. Fast forward a year and the dreaded question to which many moms ask finally came up. "Do I go back to work, leave my baby with a stranger, have crippling guilt and inevitably screw up my child to the point of having mommy issues?!?!" Yes, it really was that dramatic. Well I reluctantly went back to work knowing we were going to be having more children, hopefully, soon. But that didn't stop me from wanting to develop a plan to help me be a financial provider while having the flexibility of staying home with my child(ren). It really only made sense to take the plunge and start a bath and body line dedicated to making natural, hand crafted products. And of course THE most important detail was the name. I wanted something beautiful, sentimental and professional. The only name that made sense was to name my company after my daughter, Willow Nicole. She was the inspiration after all.
And here we are a couple years later, another baby and asking the same damn question, "Do I go back to work, leave my babies with a stranger, have crippling guilt and inevitably screw up my children to the point of having mommy issues?!?!". My business is a baby itself, so I won't be lounging on a private yacht sipping on champagne any time soon, but I am blessed to have a supportive enough husband who agreed that staying home with my THREE babies is what is best.
This first blog post is an introduction. An introduction to Willow Nicole Cosmetics and an introduction to the world that we are here! We want to be the product you swear by for your dehydrated winter legs, put on your baby's delicate skin and drop in your warm bath after a long day at work. We want to be that brand you choose because we know life can get complicated and messy, but you can trust our products will always stay simple and honest.
If you made it to the end, thank you for taking the time to read my first blog post!
Until next time my friends, Peace out!!
**I should mention that my products are no longer DIY recipes found on Pinterest. It was a great starting point, but there is a much more sophisticated science in making body products. There were many hours invested in classes, research and testing. I had to give you the Cole's notes version of my story, because you know, that whole losing you after the first paragraph thing.
